Brad Arnold, longtime frontman of the American rock band 3 Doors Down, has revealed he is battling stage 4 kidney cancer that has spread to his lung, leading to the cancellation of all upcoming tour dates, including a scheduled appearance at the Welcome to Rockville Festival.
The 46-year-old singer shared the diagnosis in a heartfelt Instagram video posted to the band’s official account. “I actually got the diagnosis that I have a clear cell renal carcinoma that has metastasized into my lung… and that’s stage four,” Arnold said, visibly emotional. “That’s not real good.”
Clear cell renal carcinoma is the most common type of kidney cancer. In stage 4, the disease has typically spread beyond the kidney to distant organs. Arnold did not disclose details about his treatment plan or prognosis.
A founding member of 3 Doors Down, Arnold has fronted the Mississippi-based band since its formation in 1996. He wrote their breakout single “Kryptonite” while still in high school.
The band’s debut album The Better Life went platinum seven times and helped define post-grunge rock in the early 2000s.
Known for hits like “Here Without You,” “When I’m Gone,” and “It’s Not My Time,” the latter of which Arnold referenced in his message, the band rose to national prominence and performed at Donald Trump’s 2017 presidential inauguration.
“I sincerely am not scared of it at all,” Arnold said in the video, reaffirming his Christian faith. “But it is gonna force us to cancel our tour this summer, and we’re sorry for that.”
He closed the video by asking fans for prayers and offering words of gratitude: “God loves you. We love you. See you.”
Arnold is the only remaining original member of 3 Doors Down and has publicly spoken about his recovery from alcoholism since 2016.
